The Admirable American for this week is Rappahannock Indian and African-American, female, justice seeker. In the 1960s, Mildred Loving was arrested for her marriage to a European-American man. At the time Virginia, and laws in 23 other states, barred interracial marriage. After arrest and prosecution, the Lovings fought inequality in the courts. Mildred Loving demanded recognition that constitutional protections of the 14th Amendment were contradicted by racial restrictions on marriage. The Lovings, aided by the ACLU, won the support of the Supreme Court in the 1967 decision Loving v. Virginia which overturned unconstitutional laws against interracial marriage.
