The Admirable American for this week is a European-American, gay, male, research geologist. After studying at Cal-Tech and Harvard, Dr. Clyde Wharhaftig worked for the US Geological Survey studying glaciers in Alaska. He advocated for public transportation to save glaciers, and for greater acceptance of minorities, women, and LGBTQ students in science programs. During his 1989 acceptance speech for the Geological Society of America’s Distinguished Career Award Dr. Wharhaftig came out as a gay male, and life partner of geophysicist Dr. Allen Cox.
