The Admirable American for this week is a psychologist, philosopher, and research scientist. Female scholar Mary Whiton Calkins led, as the first women in both cases, the American Psychological Association in 1905, and the American Philosophical Association in 1918. Although Harvard refused females admittance, Calkins studied there in graduate seminars with William James. In 1894, after she completed all required coursework, passed Ph.D. exams, and successfully defended her dissertation, Harvard professors recommended her for a Ph.D.. Harvard, however, refused Calkins her doctorate because she was a female. During her successful academic career, professor Calkins published widely, advocated pacifism, and worked for the women’s suffrage amendment.
