Press Release

Rockton, Ill. (July 19, 2017) – Hononegah Community High School District is committed to improving its infrastructure to support its students and community. With a dedication to that goal, and through a long-term review and planning process, the District has purchased the former Rockton Grade School property at 400 E. Chapel St., Rockton, IL.
The Hononegah Community High School District Board of Education approved the resolution to purchase the building during the July 19 board meeting, with a purchase price of $220,000. The property was originally owned by the Rockton School District and then shifted between private and bank ownership until it reached the most recent private owner, from whom the District has purchased the property. Purchase of the property will come from district funds, not from the recently passed fieldhouse referendum bonds.

The property, which dates back to the 1930s, has 13,000 sq. ft. of space that will be utilized for maintenance equipment, vehicles, and general storage.  The parking spaces will be used by District staff. The remainder of the facility is being reviewed through the Educational Master Facility Plan that was created in 2015.  The District remains in open discussion with the Village of Rockton on how to best utilize the space during and after the construction of the new Fieldhouse.

“Hononegah Community High School District has heard from many community members that purchasing the former Rockton Grade School property, which sits on an entire block directly west of Hononegah, is a widely supported approach to addressing the current storage, parking, and other infrastructure challenges. A number of community members thought that the property was already owned by Hononegah. The District is happy to now take control of the property for the first time and utilize it to make an immediate positive impact on storage, parking, and maintenance challenges”, said Board of Education President, David Kurlinkus.

“The purchase of the former elementary school site will provide Hononegah with additional space for maintenance and parking.  We are excited to make it part of the District’s property,” said Dr. Lynn Gibson, Hononegah Superintendent.
