Hononegah Teacher Mr. James Sabathne Publishes Past Forward: Articles from the Journal of American History

Hononegah Community High School teacher James Sabathne recently published Forward: Articles from the Journal of American History volumes I and II with Oxford University Press. Sabathne, the head of Hononegah’s Social Studies department, co-edited Past Forward with Jason Stacy from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. They collaborated with the Journal of American History, the Organization of American Historians, and thirty-plus professional historians on the project.

Past Forward is a two volume anthology of essays from the relatively recent archives of the Journal of American History. Essays selected for the anthology were chosen to meet the needs of students and teachers in an introductory college course and explores the required “key concepts” and “historical thinking skills” required in the new AP U.S. History curriculum. The book provides a brief guide for students on active reading, thinking historically, and long-term learning, and pedagogical and historiographical support for each article. It also brings together the work of professional historians and contains concise academic biographies of the authors, highlighting their path to practicing history and their major publications, in the hopes of drawing students deeper into historical discourses.
